Why cold connection requests stopped working

The math changed. Here's what buyers see now — and the cheaper trust you can build instead.

Cold connection-request-plus-pitch used to print money because it was rare. It isn't rare anymore. Every buyer worth having gets dozens a day, all running the same three-message sequence off the same tool. The channel didn't die. The cold version of it did.

What your buyer actually sees

They don't read your clever personalization. They pattern-match. Connection request from a name they don't recognize, followed within a day by a message that pivots to a pitch, is a pattern they've learned to delete on sight. You're not competing with other salespeople. You're competing with a reflex.

The problem was never the channel. The problem is being cold in it.

Volume makes it worse, not better

The instinct when reply rates drop is to send more. More requests, more follow-ups, more 'just circling back.' All that does is train the buyer's delete reflex faster and put your account closer to a restriction. You can't out-volume a trust problem.

The cheaper trust

Familiarity is trust you can build without asking for anything. Show up in the feed, be useful in the comments, let the buyer see your name a dozen times before you ever reach out. It's slower to start and it doesn't automate as cleanly — which is exactly why it still works while cold doesn't.

What to do instead

  • Comment before you connect. Earn the name recognition first.
  • Connect warm — after they've seen you, not before.
  • Open conversations, don't launch pitches.
  • Measure familiarity, not just sends. The right question is 'do they know me yet?'
Cold is fast and getting slower. Warm is slow and holding. Pick the one that still compounds.

Rather have it run for you?

That's the whole business. We'll do the hours.
